The Father Heart of God

"Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves." (John 14:10-11)
"Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!...(1 John 3:1)

God has always eternally existed as the Father...but also as the Son...and also as the Holy Spirit. This perfect unity of community, which we call the tri-unity of God manifested and multiplied His love when He chose to create mankind after His own image and likeness.

From the beginning of creation, and throughout the generations, the Father heart of God was revealed to and through His chosen and redeemed people, as James would later write in his epistle, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning" (James 1:17).

In the Garden of Eden alone, we see how…
The Father created man in His own image and likeness for His glory.
The Father gave man everything to enjoy and He blessed him.
The Father even entrusted man with the dominion over the earth to subdue it.
The Father called him to steward the garden of Eden and provided a helpmate for him.
The Father provided every good thing for them to freely eat and to prosper.
The Father only kept back one tree which would cause instant spiritual death.
The Father went after his wayward son and daughter when they sinned against Him.
The Father chastened them both toward repentance.
The Father covered his sin and shame with a sacrifice that He provided.

Thus, in the opening pages of the Bible we can see these five characteristics of the Father…

  • PRESIDING over His creation (Gen. 1:3, 2:1-2)
  • PROVIDING for His creation (Gen. 1:29-30, 2:8-9)
  • PROTECTING His creation (Gen. 2:16-17)
  • PURSUING His creation (Gen. 3:8-9)
  • PERFECTING His creation (Gen. 3:21)

Later, God would choose a man named Abram whose name meant "father" and He changed it to Abraham which means “Father of multitudes or many nations" and made a covenant with Him.

So God took a simple man named “father” and told him to leave his idolatrous father so that He would do the will of his heavenly Father to start the linage for His Son to be a Savior to the world.

We have all heard the expression, “You are a chip off the old block” or “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” or “Like Father, like son.” Never has this been more true than with Jesus and the heavenly Father. Jesus has always been with the Father doing all things in perfect unity and therefore He reveals everything that we wanted to know about the Father.

Jesus makes the Father heart of God even more knowable and relatable. Jesus INITIATED His love toward us by loving us first (1 John 4:19). Jesus DEMONSTRATED the Father's love by His sacrificial death on the cross (Rom. 5:8). Jesus POURED His love into our hearts by His Spirit (Rom. 5:5). And now Jesus is PERFECTING His love in us (1 John 4:12).

But this amazing mystery of the Father and the Son working so beautifully together as one goes even deeper when we consider how God desires to reveal His Father heart in His believing Church, just as Jesus prayed, "And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

The Apostle John wraps this up 1 John 4:17 saying, "Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world."

The Father heart of God which was revealed in the Son is now being worked in our hearts by His indwelling Spirit. One of the most amazing truths that reveals our blessed hope is where the Lord's beloved disciple John says, "Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM, for we shall see Him as He is. Wow! Just stop and take that in for a moment or two or three!

May this living hope breath fresh life into your day today and forever! For Christ in us is the HOPE OF GLORY!
